Cowfish are my fav fish by far. And i have a fish only tank to house him in. I know that cowfish like to munch on corals, but i was just wondering if anyone has ever seen a cowfish in a reef or would know a possible way to do it. I know its prolly impossible , but i thought it was worth a shot to ask. Thanks

why not? i heard it eats corals but on other places it says it will just eat crabs and tube worms, i have a 6 inchish one, so hes pretty young still.

I guess after it consumes all the crabs and tubeworms, it would then go to polyps.

If you're willing to be another test subject, give it a try.

I find keeping a mixed reef daunting enough even without fish that are know to eat corals. Redbugs, nudibranchs, acro eating flatworms, STN & RTN events due to just alkalinity fluctuations or from wild colony syndrome or for no reason whatsoever. The list goes on and on.

Why not? Well, its a well documented fact if you search the net, read others experiences with them, and you have heard yourself it is likely. So, ultimatly, your choice. But, you asked here for other opinions, take what you will from them.

im just trying to figure out what i would want to look for if i did put the cowfish in a reef

You would want to look for a dead reef when the cowfish dies and poisons the whole tank.

Even when stressed, it can produce enough toxin to wipe out a tank. Most grow to 18", so a tank too small would be stressful too.

We still don't have a cowfish and maybe we will never have one.

But our plan was to set up a large tank with live rock and the cowfish would be paramount in this tank.

So, any further addition to this tank would be done only with the cowfish in mind.

Cowfish are great character fish like puffers and triggers. So, you will get already much entertainment with the cowfish only. He is a real pet and recognises you. Well, all are different characters but none of them is dull or boring
.

I would do a FO tank for a cowfish, the toxin can and probably will kill any LR you put in the tank. Or if you want it for looks just buy base rock to save some money.
