At the Bottom, gilling rapidly.
What are your thoughts about the Eheim prefilter? (pictured on right)

Putting in 2x 2217 canisters soon, and considering to use prefilters. If not these, can you reccomend another product? My original thought was just putting some foam boots over the endcaps, or something. These prefilters will add a lot of bulk inside the aquarium so I am hesitant. (75g)

Since we are on the subject, can anyone speak to the usefulness of the other eheim accessories? What are your thoughts about skimmers, er, "surface extractor" on freshwater tanks? What about other items like "oxygen diffuser" (bubbler in the output hose?), and "suction starter" for easier priming.... what /exactly/ are they? Are they useful/good?

Thanks in advance,
Zeb

That's the sort of thing I was thinking of originally. But, seems a little small, though? I was expecting something like 2-3 times that length?

One of the reasons I'm skeptical of the Eheim prefilter, besides its bulk, is that it looks like it would add a lot of flow restriction. What size canister are you using the FilterMax #3 prefilter on?

Two Eheim Pro II 2026, a 160gph powerhead and a H.O.T. Magnum plumbed in a river tank.

The filter sponge is bigger than it looks in the picture.

A prefilter doesn't have to be as complicated as the eheim to do a good job. A sponge on your intake would be just as good of a prefilter.

Bulk in this sense usually means more surface area, or less restriction to flow.
