I have managed to keep it down after changing lighting and stuff like that but to completely get rid of hair algea do I really need to remove everything from my tank it just seems I cant get it to go away completely. Is there anything that eats it?

Hair algae is one of the hardest of the algaes to get rid of. If you cannot get rid of it completely and it keeps coming back, then yes tearing most of the tank down(not the gravel or whatever you are using for a substrate ) is probably what you have to do. This does not mean steralizing everything or cleaning it too much. You just remove what is infected with this stuff and go from there. Also do a large water change. Do not do a massive clean up since that will throw you into another cycle. You want to keep the good bacteria just get rid of this annoying and unsightly problem. Do you have live plants in this tank? If not I would consider adding some of them such as hornwort and anacharis since they are fast growers and will suck up all or most of the nutrients in the water and outcompete the algae for the nutrients. If you go that route you can add some Florish for the plants and Florish Excel as well which will help keep the algae under control.

Good luck with it and I hope your hair algae problem gets resolved soon.

Hair algae? The green type, right(making sure you don't mean BBA)? Get 1 amano shrimp per 5 gallons of that tank and watch it go away. I had hair algae on my plants and rocks, even substrate. They ate it all within a week.

Dex:

My post is made based on the assumption that you have a planted tank.

If you go this this route you are fighting the symptom and the not the cure.

I had a weird situation recently with hair algae growing on only a few plants of the same species.

Two of the Forum's plant gurus recommended that I increase the potassium dosing slightly.

Within a week substantially all of the hair algae was gone.
