I've joined the dark side. Soon to be manager of the Petland Lancaster fish dep.

Congratulations on the new job! I'm sure you'll do AC proud.

Everyone's already given good advice, but I have some questions:

Are you allowed to choose your stock, or do you have to take what the chain sends you? A mix of both?

What kind of filtration does that store employ? I assume one massive system for all tanks, but does it have a UV sterilizer on it? (Given the risks of spreading disease, I would think the company would want to protect its livestock.) Can you post some pictures of the filtering system?

And good job on moving the bettas! I'm sure they'll be perkier with more room, and thus sell better. :thm:

congrats

first things first... talk to corporate and find out what you are and are not allowed to do...
nothing stings more than doing yer best and doing it right only to get fired for it..

my suggestion is to do a how-to/checklist for any new buyer to make sure they get it right the rirst time:)(we've all been there!!!)
things to include:
setup - step by step
etc.

So much good advice. Phew i've got work ahead of me. I've revised the species cards i made, And started planning how i want to do the salt side of things.

There are 12 tanks to one sump. And 4 sumps for the wall of tanks. Where i want to put the saltwater, there is nothing just a shelf. So i don't know what i'm going to do there.

As for the checklist they have the thing for a puppy, ive always wondered why not for fish.

chesterthehero congrats

 Both very good points!! Unlike Mom & Pop operations, corporations aren't always as liberal in their thinking. Quite often the 'bottom line' (profit) is the main focus of attention. Maximizing output while minimizing input is sure to be the protocol. BTW, find out why the last mgr. quit or was fired. Could be helpful. Although it's commendable that you would want to operate this establishment as your own fish room, the correct way, this is a business, someone elses business!! Temper your passion w/ good business savy. Try to win small battles not the whole war. Compromise is sure to come into play. Give & take is the way to stay in the game so you can do some good. I'm not saying toss your integrity but choose your battles carefully & know the limitations. I know it seems like I'm raining on your sunshine but nothing could be further from the truth. I am proud of you & wish you success but in 50 odd yrs. I've witnessed some of the best intentions shredded by the wayside. In the mind of corporate, the best man for the job often isn't as important as the best job for the least money. Again, best of luck, keep your head low & watch your back cause 'sharks' are in the water!! JMPO, "T"

You got some serious brass there fella!!! Working for a chain and asking for our "free" buisness ideas. I don't think this is a buisness consultant website.

I appreciate seeing someone fix up a messed up situation..but come on. You are getting payed for your questions being answered by us.

In the real world buisnesses pay for consultation like this.

I guess if you see it that way. I was merely using The fish enthusiast website i am part of for sounding ideas off of. But if you merely see this as a way for free business advice then i guess thats your problem. Yea its a business, but first in my mind comes the care for the fish. How many lfs stores have you went to where you wished you could change things? Well now there is a chance to implement some changes and see that people get educated the right way into our hobby.

Where in any of my post did i ask hey tell me how to make money for my chain. I'm in it for the fish, it just so happens my job is now fish. So are you saying from now on I should just make things up? instead of asking question of people who may already know the answers and have more knowledge on a subject than i do? I didn't know it was such a bad thing to ask advice. I your thinking, anyone who consults any sort of resource is soliciting free business advice if they happen to be doing a job at the time. I don't see myself being in the wrong here.

It may not be a mom and pop, but it is a franchise, so were not as corporate bound as other stores. Plus i have a pretty wide authority on what i can change in my dept.
