I've joined the dark side. Soon to be manager of the Petland Lancaster fish dep.

:headshake2: Easy, easy!?! This is a test. Picture it as your first difficult customer. You're not gonna be able to please them all so settle for the majority. Remeber what I said about compromise :grinyes: "T"

This is the real buisness world buddy!
Buisness consultation is a real thing that corp. buisness pay thousands of dollars for.
If you need to ask a forum how to do your job then maybe you are not the right person for it.
Too bad this isn't just my opinion. Every person that gave your company advise is legally entitled.

Okay well start charging for your advice then, for anyone that asks on this board. I did not once ask for how to do my job. If anything it could be seen as a marketing survey. There are plenty of those and most are done for free. I know some are paid, but there are plenty that do them freely. So if someone walked up to you and asked you what changes would you like to see at such and such store. You'd ask them to pay you first before you gave your opinion.

What about all the questions that are asked on here? Are those then business consultations as well? If i go to the library and look up a specific on a fish question i have do i have to pay the library for there book or the info i gleaned from it. What if i ask the librarian to help me locate said book, do i pay her for her "consulting" time?

On the subject of doing my job. I am doing my job, my number one job description is the safe care and upkeep of the aquatics department. Forgive me for being human and not instantly knowing all the knowledge of fish keeping. Should i let a fish die or not be cared for if i don't happen to have the knowledge on it? Would you? or do you know everything that you don't need to ask. If you do more power to you, You should be rich with all the consulting you do.

If i didn't do any of my own research i could see where you might have a point, but i do.

:) In this capitalist, litigious society in which we live there are those who will choose to focus primarily on the 'dollars & cents' of any/everything. "What's in it for me?" is their chant!! There's nothing you can do to change that. You recognize, accept & move on because expending your energy in a 'no win' fight is a waste :wall:!! There are plenty of folks (they call them friends) that are willing to help you w/ your task & their reward is seeing you succeed. A simple 'Thank You' is payment in full. The little 'diddy' in my sig (knowledge gained & not shared is knowledge lost) was told to me over 30 yrs. ago & I live by it to this day! I don't know the origin but they have been sound words to live by. Remember, head low, watch your back cause there's 'sharks' in the water. :shark: "T"

So much good advice. Phew i've got work ahead of me. I've revised the species cards i made, And started planning how i want to do the salt side of things.
Smurf, if you need help on species profiles (particularly loaches), I'm willing to help you.:grinyes: All I want is the loaches not being used by lots of people to clean up algae, snails, etc.:lipssealedsmilie: :headbang2:

Congrats! I just want to agree completely with Tony's posts....just make sure you check with corporate before you do things, and realize that you'll have to compromise on some things. I have seen before people with the best of intentions that have just refused too many sales (to anyone who doesn't have a pretty much 'ideal' tank for the fish) and implemented too many expensive changes that probably made the fish healthier but in the end didn't change the profit margin - and ended up getting let go. The best thing for the fish and the customers would be for you to continue to work there, so just know how to 'pick your battles'. Good luck!

yeah, i agree with lucy here. i think that you should just advise the customers on what you think the fish require, if they don't listen to you and end up buying the fish anyway, don't feel guilty about it, you have done your job and made them aware of things.its the fact that you told them what the fish need, and that is now on their conscience, i'm sure you will do great. keep us updated! :)

I think you should have a some stock of hard to find, odd species, as well as common and somewhat common fish. Like Lucy said, there will be some customers that will not listen to anything you say, no matter how much sense you make. It is up to you if you refuse the sale. If you do refuse the sale, the fish will be healthy and happy, but you risk a customer coming back. Fortunately, most people will take the advice. Make sure the other employees are educated as well, because people will also take their advice. I go to 1 LFS, and only take advice from 2 of their 12+ employees.

If it's a franchise he has a lot of freedom. Not 100% freedom but enough freedom to hit what he's aiming for.

Seriously man I wish you the best of luck and I think we are all happy to be a small part of this and help you out. I just wish I knew more to help you out. If i had to pay for each question I asked here I would be living on the streets by now.
