I am sure you could pick one up at walmart, or meijer, or home depot, or menards... for way less than $27...

and besides, its insulated! how many canister filters are insulated?!?!

I always wanted to try to build a canister from a 5G water cooler...
is it best to put the pump in the bottom of it, then bio media, polishing filter floss, then normal filter on the very top?

By having the pump on the bottom you can partially fill the canister before you start it up and can be assured the pump has water to begin the flow. Hopefully the pump is strong enough to create enough suction to draw the water in from the tank.
