Question on bamboo plants

carbon filtration

There was no active carbon filtration in the tank with the bamboo plants.

Should this be done any time new plants are added?

Ill say unless the bamboo was already rotting when you put it in the tank..it was chemical contamination on the bamboo. Was it sold for aquatic use at the pet store? How did it come packaged
The bamboo was pulled out of a tank at petsmart. This tank was in the same wall of tanks where the fish are kept - so most likely the same water. It was not taken from the 'seperate' tank of plants that are in a different section from the fish.

The bamboo came from petsmart. The bamboo was taken from the wall of fish tanks where the fish are kept, so most likely its the same water the fish have. The plant was NOT taken from the seperate sets of tanks for plants only - they are located in a different section than the fish.

I think I"m confusing people

You said you bought this at Petsmart? It shouldn't be chemicals and within a few days it didn't rot. Nothing else changed about this tank? How was the bamboo placed in to the tank? Was the water from the fish store added to the tank?

The bamboo was not in my tank - but in a coworkers and their neighbors. They didn't have Ich. Their fish died a day or two after the bamboo plants were put in their tank. Prior to putting the bamboo in the tank the fish were fine for 6 months or more.

I had ich in my tank - but no bamboo plants. My plants were more like long grass blades. My plants were doing good until I treated the tank for ich. After treating the tank for ich, the plants started to decline. I decided to replace the live plants after the Ich treatment. I lost no fish during or after the ich treatment.

I am still having a difficult time thinking the bamboo killed the fish. I have some in my Flowerhorn tank that has been there for months now and neither the Flowerhorn or the VERY LARGE Briggs have suffered any ill effects. Here is a pic of mine, maybe the fish were ill and just not showing any signs.

well carbon filtration removes organic compounds (molecules linked the element carbon). This is most chemicals used in the world, especially in pesticides and many other things.

So, normally I don't run carbon. But, I tend to run carbon when there's even the slightest chance of anything foriegn being introduced to the tank.

Forgot to mention....

I used carbon for 3 days after the ich treatment. My non-bamboo plants looked beaten up so I replaced them.

I use a Kent liquid plant fertilizer on the plants

I think both fish tanks were healthy before the bamboo. The coworkers - not 100% sure. Their neighbors - he was meticulious about his fish tank, so I am sure his fish were healthy.

Either way, its odd that two seperate tanks had all their fish die after adding bamboo plants from petsmart.

The bamboo in your tank looks nice.

I dont think I'd chance getting my plants from Petsmart. Last time I went there, 1/2 of their plants looked dead, so I went to a LFS for plants

Where did you get your bamboo plant?
