Betta and Sparkling Gourami compatibility?

I have a pair of sparkling gouramis in with 2 female bettas. They were all fine until the gouramis started breeding. Then the pair almost beat my bettas to death. I have since taken the bettas out and now have a tank full of little sparklers. IMO stick to one or the other because they will eventually fight.

Those little guys are tough! :headbang2:

I wouldn't mix them. It's a bigger tank but I wouldn't because both fish have an aggressive streak and I wouldn't want to stress myself out worrying about who was going to kill who when I'm not home.

Mine were in a 125 gallon densely planted tank and they still fought. It doesn't matter how big the tank is.

OK. I'm convinced. No sparkling gouramis in the betta tank.

But if I do I should bet on the gouramis. Do I have it right?:grinyes:

If I put the gouramis in a 12 gallon tank with other small fish, do they act the same way when they start to breed?

How 'bout the spotted blue eyes with the betta? Rainbow fish generally get along with anyone, but these have very pretty fins. Has anyone tried these together?

Well, we have celebes and a betta together in a planted tank in the store I work at... they don't seem to mind each other. But I think the blue eyes may be more showy than celebes. Again, it matters entirely upon the personality of the betta you have.

I've always done well keeping female bettas and female gouramis in the same tank. I'm not sure I'd risk males though. Not because I expect trouble but because I don't like risking trouble when it's not necessary.

Sparkling gouramis and bettas are not to be mixed together. They do have varying personalities but I would not push the luck further by trying both. You'll be amazed how size is no guarantee. Sparkling gouramis may be timid but they will also attack viciously if they foresee their tankmates as rivals. Either side loses.
