Care of freshwater clams

In the winter when water freezes over, most animals metabolisms slow enough into for lack of a better phrase of words, a hibernation level. It would be a nice idea, a pretty cool thing to look at but I agree, clams in the home aquaria is often a bad move and can do more harm than good. They like to bury theirselves in the substrate and chances are they will die there. You will be missing one clam and wondering why your tank has suddenly taken a turn for the worst.

It'd ridiculous to say a clam needs 300 gallons because people have successfully kept them in much smaller tanks. It's just that they're not a fit for typical tanks. They prefer cooler temperatures, require a high amount of water flow and could require supplemental feeding. They can also be bothered by many fish and invertebrates.

Sounds like good advice.

Cherry shrimp it is!!

I've had no luck getting cherry shrim from LFS for months. So today I took home a albino pletco cat fish. He cleans the corners of the glass that the snail cant get to.

I did find someone local here who said he'd email me when he had more cherry shrimp to sell.

I think the colors look cool

That albino pleco is probably going to get way too big for your 10 gallon. Please return him to the store.

Shrimp are definitely the way to go. Just be patient until you can get some.

clams don't need "pristine tanks" infact that will be their biggest cause of death.

im not saying let crap accumulated....but being filter feeders they need to have water with alot of "food" in the water column. I read they clean up green water in days...

im sure some types of food for saltwater invertebrates can work...

Plan on getting a 30-50 gallon tank soon

If the pletco grows too quickly, I'll just have to upgrade the tank sooner.

Thanks for letting me know

Start looking for a BIGGER tank this weekend

If your pleco grows anything like mine I would suggest buying a bigger tank now :) They grow QUICK.....Why don't you order shrimp from online? I am sure Msjinkzd can help you out and if not she sure can point you in the right direction.

I figured I should look for a bigger tank soon. IT will take time to cycle the tank and I hear catfish are sensitive to the cycle process.

Right now I just one 1 shrimp - so not worth the postage. Plus I wont be home when its delivered - i'll be at work. They will leave a slip so that adds another day before I can pick it up.

After I get a 30 or 50 gallon tank, and its done cycling, I might have msjinx ship me some shrimp (more than 1 then lol) to my sisters house.

Msjinx looks like she has some cool snails too. I figure with a bigger tank I can get another snail or two.

Picking up a 35 gallon tank tomorrow!!

FYI, don't purchase a 35g just for a pleco, it will need a larger tank than that too. Also, some species need wood to munch on to keep them healthy (I guess it's a good source of fiber).

All shrimp are fun, you can never go wrong with shrimp. I recently acquired a colony of Macrobrachium scabriculum. :) They're fascinating buggers, and growing nicely.
