Cacs just laid - I'll be out of town when they hatch!

So I caught my cacs doing the nasty yesterday and now have a flowerpot all full of eggs. The only problem is that I'll be out of town from Monday-Wednesday, when they should hatch.

My brother in law will be house sitting, but I can't trust him to do much more than drop in some flakes.

This is my only current tank, a 45G tall community and I can't set up another established filter for another tank yet as I just moved all my previous media to my new rena xp3. I can't put a divider in, but I do have a decent little breeder net box that I can put the eggs/wigglers in until I get back.

Does anyone have any advice?

I always love doing that! Using my ipod touch is sooooo fun! Yah but just put the eggs in the breeder box maybe?

ok if the eggs were laid yesterday they should hatch Monday night or Tuesday morning. when of course your not home :wall:


if you leave your bother in law a note maybe? as to what he needs to do for the fry?

is there a reason you cant go out and buy a 10 gallon or even a 5 gallon? same thing with the divider the net box might work if there wrigglers but not as eggs the mother must fans the eggs or they will likely die thats why breeders purchase tumblers. i say just let the parents care for the eggs if your lucky they might get it right the first time.
 
I have a 10 and a 5 gallon in my garage, but all my established biomedia is in my rena right now.

I suppose I could pull a handful of matrix from the xp3 and put it in my spare aquaclear 50.

edit: Or put the breeder net-box in front of the spraybar...

this would be the best choice for you if you want to keep any fry at all
 
Another possibility, do nothing.

Since you know they are a spawning pair, they'll attempt it again, and you'll be ready for it and less stressed. But you may get lucky and they will raise the fry on their first try.
 
...and that's what I may do.

The other female had a clutch of eggs eaten by a bristlenose pleco (who is now living in a huge 12ft x 6ft x 3ft tank at my vet's office now), I felt so bad for her as she sadly looked around her little clay pot for the eggs.

The angels, rainbows, and 3 guppies may nom nom nom the fry, but they can always make more.

Daddy is the largest fish in the tank, so he and mommy can defend their home in the corner behind the slate wall pretty well. Those little panda corys have been getting chased off like a dog poopin in an old man's yard.
 
With an inexperienced fish-sitter the do nothing option seems a good idea. You'll have other chances with less bad possibilities, the couple probably needs the practice :grinyes:
 
i agree just let them be if your lucky some fry might make it.
