Hey guys,

I was going to start a new 55 gallon tank and have decided to give live plants a try. I have heard good things about them, but a lot of local fish stores and such told me that they were somewhat a pain.

So I'm going to try to make a live planted aquarium!
The question is that I'm wondering what kind of plants that you guys would recommend for quality and ease. Im also wondering if I should fertilize the plants or not? Finally, since this is going to be my first live planted aquarium I would like to know if theres an article or some routine on how to maintain a live planted aquarium.

Suggestions for some nice, easy live plants? :)

Thanks for reading and your help!

I'd recommend Java moss, Cryptocoryne wendtii, C. balansae, hygrophilas, Java ferns, anubias and vallisnerias. They're easy to keep. Do you plan to use CO2 injection? It's optional but with high lighting, it encourages some moderate to high lighting plants to grow quickly although you need to supplement them with ferts to cope with the nutrient consumption otherwise they may wither from nutrient deficiency. Liquid ferts or root tablets aren't that bad. The latter lasts longer though and is best placed near the plant roots.

:iagree:

I'd recommend starting off with low maintenance plants and going from there. No need to jump into the deep end.

Hmm I really never heard of that CO2 injection method to be honest...
I mean yeah, I usually keep my regular 29 gallon tank non-live planted tank lighted from like 6-12 hours daily overnight.

But if you would really recommend it, then I may be able to try it with some advice.

What brands should I look for ( fertilizers, root tablets , CO2 injectors, etc ) And what brands should i avoid?

So, What do you think would be the best method for my optimal setup?
( For my NEW tank that I'm going to get )

Thanks!

You don't need CO2 injection if you want the low lighting plants. I'll leave the brands of the ferts to the rest because all I used was Sera.:)

Truthfully if you want to wade into the planted world, I'd suggest you start with Java (or other) moss and maybe Java ferns, Anubias, or Anacharis. Some plants are very needy and require alot of setup and work. The easy ones are best to start with IMO. Your lighting duration and type will work for easy ones. To jump into a high tech planted tank would require new lights, CO2 equipment, and ferts.

Well I think since my new 55 gallon tank in my basement ( not a lot of people go in the basement besides me, I dont have any other places to put a new aquarium ) I just thought that i should have some low maintenance. I mean it would be nice, but if I find another place to put the tank im going to get, it would most likely be in my room.

So I guess low - moderately would be the way to go... for now?

Thanks,
