Help with changing substrate in african tank

If you don't change out the filter media, there should be no need to save the gravel. The beneficial bacteria requires high oxygenation and therefore is predominantly in the filter media. The amount on the substrate will be negligible.
I'm not saying your wrong. I did it mostly because I knew it was a surefire way to not mess it up. I'm sure filter only would be enough but I didn't want to take any chances. Hence why I did it.

Oh... I totally agree in going overboard in the name of safety! I have an OCD sorta need to err on the side of caution. :grinyes:

I posted as much to stress the importance of not changing media while changing substrate as I did to "discount" the benefit of established substrate. Hope that makes some sort of sense...
 




here are some pics, In reference to my question I didnt want to upset the cycle of the tank I do understand that I will have to take out the fish and all decor to do this change I just wanted to make sure that I dont get "new tank syndrome" all over again. again thanks for any help.

you don't have to take out the fish. They will be fine.
