fish dying in just 1 hour

Not to get technical but a learning experience means you learn while experiencing...but that is not the point. We have all made mistakes at some point in this hobby. And while I wish people would ask questions here first, like krytan said LFS's are the source for a lot of misinformation as is the internet. So rather than yell at someone for doing something wrong why don't you contribute to the thread in a positive way and help us educate the OP. That is what this forum is about. If you cannot say anything nice don't say anything at all :grinyes:

For the record, I was not yelling at poor dave here. I was merely shouting from the rooftop to stop the madness.

As for "contributing to the thread in a positive way", I believe that I have. If you'll see response #37 in this thread, you'll see that young dave now gets it.

It should be fine to drink my tap water..
I am in Singapore just for the information..
All the tap water is safe to drink here for what I know, But I will check on that again just to make sure..
Maybe chlorine is the culprit from this inccident..

I think Hooked Newbie hit it on the nose: a combination of unchlorinated water and unacclimated fish. I wouldn't worry anymore about RO water and just use the tap. Make sure to treat the water with the dechlorinator every time you change the water or top-off.

edit: I agree, I like prime the best. Amquel + works well too from what I have heard. I used to use a no-name brand from my LFS that did the job. I say find whatever is available to you that works.

yah.. I think everything has been settled..
so I'm going LFS tommorow and a test kit along with the substrate..
Both of you can shake hand already :headbang2:

I agree with all of the post so far. Cycling the tank is very important. Good to learn now though.

Neons are probably not the best fish to introduce to a newly set up tank. They are one of the harder fish to keep. Mainly because of the way they are mass produced, IMO. By the time they reach our tanks half of them don't stand a chance. You can expect deaths with neons. Of course it really depends on the source. I purchased 6 neons several months ago and all 6 are still alive. Knock on wood.

Perhaps you can try some zebra danios or white clouds. Both can be purchased cheaply around here (Usually 6 for $1). Both are hard to kill, even in new tanks, in my experience. I personally keep these guys anyway. I like how they add more movement in the tank, always chasing each other.

Glad you got the help you n eed, best of luck and please ask any questions that you have.

Please remember to keep any advice from being directed negatively towards a member. We are here to offer advice based on our experiences. Most of us have made mistakes that we regret, its one of the ways we have all learned and now have the opportunity to share this information. Keep posts on topic to the op's questions.

I will treat this as a closed thread..
Any other question, I will post it on the other thread..
Thank you all, you guys are such a great help..
:headbang2:

Jeez... ignore a thread for a couple hours and all heck breaks out... lol

The tank is uncycled Karl. Two weeks is a bad estimate as well. It will take as long as it takes if you do a fishless cycle Dave. A test kit and good water conditioner (like Prime) will be your best friends in starting back up right. Feel free to post any questions. I've been there...
