I'm considering setting up a sump for my 75 gallon reef tank but i haven't a clue where to even begin......how large would the sump have to be, could i use an empty 10 gallon tank? Would I still need a canister filter or does a sump take the place of a filter? I'd like to get my protein skimmer off the back of my tank is one of the reasons I'd like to do this. Can somone please help??? How do you make a sump, what would I need, etc.

Thanks a lot!!

i would get the biggest tank or sump that you can fit inside your stand. the sump will replace your canister filter...you can always use it to run carbon in once a month. make sure your skimmer can be used in sump unles you are buying a new one. all you need is a tank and some baffles. you can use pressure locking baffles or you can get some glass cut at your local glas shop and buy some aquarium silicone. google diy sump to get some ideas. you might want to incorporate a refugium into your sump.

:iagree:
I made the mistake of not building a sump from the beginning, when I could have put a 55g or a 75g in my stand. Now the only thing I can get through the doors is a 30g. I bought a tank and some 1/4" acrylic and made my baffles, new overflow and Ocean Runner pump from ebay, plumbing from Lowe's, etc... I would be happy to post a pic of the finished sump (yet to be installed) if you like.

Something, almost anything, is better than nothing. Regardless of size you can copy many of the DIY plans around and simply change the scale and/or component arrangement to fit within your restrictions. Then, you may have to further modify your set-up based on its actual performace as part of your system.

Good luck
