I've been trying to pick a species of tetra for my 46g tank for a while now and would love suggestions based on my current fish.

The tank holds three large angelfish(not fully grown), four ottos, 9 cory cats(5 peppered, three juli's and one skunk) and one juvi raphael catfish. The tank is well planted with plenty of hiding spots and Malaysian driftwood. Ammonia and Nitrite are both at 0 and nitrate is usually at 10. The ph is very close to 7 and its slightly soft water. I keep the temp at 80*F.

I'm not too concerned with the coloration of the fish. I'm looking for one that may get to 3" but not much more. I do like Pristella's, black neons, and flame tetras. I also like black skirted tetras but my hubby would prefer "something with color":silly: I'm more aimed towards peaceful and less of a tendancy towards fin nipping. I'm also leery of plant eaters like buenos aries tetras, pretty as they are lol. A tight school is better but not necessary. I plan to get a group of 6 at least but groups of up to 12 are possible.

Thanks for the suggestions, they're appreciated.

Rummynose Tetras are the best type of tetra in the 3"-4" range, IMO. Large enough to not get eaten by an angelfish. But they are SUPER delicate and are suseptible (sp?) to water quality and temperature swings.

I'd add Penguins and Diamonds to the choice list. Also, what about hatchets?

The diamonds are very pretty; I was under the impression that the red eyes are a bit nippy although I do like the look of them.

They are not as delicate as people think if properly acclimated and from good stock. I have a school of 20 in one tanks and a school of 8 in another. I haven't lost one since I tried to add a small one (that was given to me) to the tank with my Festivum. It wasn't quite big enoough. :wall:
