Monsoon temp swings = Columnaris

I can't help but notice how many NEW threads there are all of a sudden with what appear to be bacterial outbreaks. Neon tetra, columnaris questions, etc. The temperature issue is a clear factor in many of these outbreaks, IMO. It's that time of year. Conditions that would normally not be a factor previously are now conducive for bacterial outbreak in the context of elevated ambient temepratures.
I've noticed that especially in MFK forums, DrVader.:( Columnaris is unfortunately a very contagious bacterial infection and not many people realize how dangerous this disease can be especially as it is mistaken for neon tetra disease and fungus, both cases seldom happen in comparison to this one.

Columnaris (Flexibacter columnaris)
Synonyms:
Cotton-wool, Mouth Fungus, Flexibacter

Symptoms:
White mouth with tiny filaments, white areas near edge of scales, clamped fins, fins start to rot in the later stage, fish struggles and sways near the surface

Causes:
This is bacterial infection which is very common in the aquaria and is very contagious. Immediate action is needed to contain it before it spreads to other fish.

Treatment:
Broad spectrum antibiotics, Sera Baktopur, Binox, Maracyn I & II, Kanacyn, Terramycin, Acriflavine, Furan, Copper Sulfate

Flexibacter columnaris thrives very well in warm waters therefore it is necessary to gradually lower the temperature to prevent it from progressing.

Reading these symptoms makes me think its not columnaris, I don't see anything around his mouth, nor white areas, the only white area are the 2 dots on his fin and the appearance of his fin deteriorating. He does not appear to struggle swimming and is all over the tank, top level, bottom level, mid level. I did notice him swimming upside down just now though (albeit a very controlled upside down swim) and last night noticed redness at the base of his fins. Trying to get pictures today to post in the thread I have in the Cichlids forum.

Everything continues to look good here. Main tank has no alarm symptoms on day 4 of 5 with the Maracyns. I'm going to stop by the local feed/ranch store today on my way home to check out their bulk antibiotics. I'd like to do the Tx. course for the full 10 days as generally suggested, and another 5 days of Maracyn/Maracyn2 packets is not very appealing. If they have kanacyn, we have a winner for. Otherwise, erythro (for gram pos. coverage) + minocycline will be the ticket again.

Glad to hear your gourami is better, I am still unsure about what is up with my angel. He is still acting strange, but the symptoms are either very slowly developing, or its something different.

The worrying part is that all the while I can't determine what is wrong with him I can't properly treat him and I am worried that by the time I do find out it will be too late.
