Every time I do laundry, I remember something obnoxious I read out of a little "household hints and tips" book. it just pops into my head.

it was "to save on energy costs, wash the clothes in cold water so you aren't wasting money on hot water, because you can buy cold-water detergents and it cleans them just as well with less energy."

but then later in the book, it said that you will save time and money when drying clothes if you put in clothes that have been washed in hot or warm water. the clothes will be warmer to start with and then the dryer can heat and then dry them faster and more efficiently.

SO WHICH IS IT?

the thing that bugs me even more is that i don't have my own washer or dryer anyway. ugh.
 
get a wash board and a clothes line and call it a day.
 
I think most washers rinse on COLD anyway, so it doesn't matter what temp you wash in.... once the clothes are rinsed, they're nicely chilled. Maybe you can microwave them first before drying?
 
here's a helpful hint.... if you use laundry softener or the softener sheets in the dryiner, take the link screen out of the dryer and run it under water. You will notice that the water beads off the screen. This screen should be cleaned with a toothbrush periodically to remove the dryersheet or softer film off of it. It will save some energy in drying.
 
When the washer buzzes the clothes go in the dryer - The end! If you dry timed dry thenit doesn't matter hot or cold because dryer still runs the same length of time. . . . . . .

And if you hang your clothes out to dry on a hot day,do you lose more energy from all the times the door is open and the cool air gets out vs running the dryer?

Or vice-versa in the winter.

Here's one that does work: During heating season, I vent my dryer INSIDE, it adds free moist heat to the house. I use pantyhose over the vent hose to filter the lint out. (and yes, I plug the outside vent too)
