Crayola sand

according to my research it is made out of quartz sand and colored in acrylic based color that is bonded to the sand to make it water proof, but thanks for sending in another letter to them. they will reply with 'it is non-toxic but not tested on animals'

Got my purple sand today at Wally World. $5 for a 20 lb bag with a Mom friendly carrying handle.

Also got a response to my question that I sent the n2M Group

Good Morning Alan!

Thank you for your interest in our Crayola PlaySand! It is a Crayola standard to not do any animal testing. However I've had this question a couple of times, and I assure you were are nearing a definite answer based on alternative test. I can tell you that none of the pigments or bonding agents are toxic. Crayola Play Sand is washed prior to being coated which rids it of most any other contaminant. I assume that is safe for aquatic life as I have two beta's in the office swimming with sand now. Again, no official animal testing has been done. If you encounter any problems please let us know immediately.

Any other questions feel free to contact me. Thanks again!

Well when someone answers the crayola sand question...next i will make a post about MOON SAND! :D:D

Hi! I went ahead an asked the n2M Group about the Crayola Colored Play Sand (they are the ones who make the sand for Crayola!). You'd be impressed with their answers. As with all crayola products no animal testing has been done, however in regards to dangerous chemicals---none! It is washed in high heat water, and is colored with an ACMI approved non-toxic colorant (acrylic based). It has been certified as safe through the ACMI, and has done several testing and analysis through Duke University and Bio Laboratory Testing Sites. It has registered as Non-Toxic, Non-irritating, and safe for even babies.
If your worried about them eating the sand, you have less to worry about. The sand itself is rounded down to not have any rough edges, giving it a very sugar-y type feel. Its quartz, much like just regular beach sand, but has undergone a dust collecting and washing process.
As for washing up after the fish...just use water :) like you would regular rocks.
Hope that helps! I have two beta's in my office and they are swimming just fine for over 2 months. Red fish in green sand, Yellow fish in the Blue.

yup...not too different than the sand most of us already use and same kinda 'paint' bonded to the sand as on gravel. i still haven't had a chance to get to walmart yet but hopefully soon or i might have to wait till next summer cause the garden center will be closed. when i finally get around to it i'll post updates. i was surprised to see someone revived this thread.
