10G Setup

I dont really think it matters how many CORALS you put in but it will depend what type of corals as in Leathers, Shrooms, Zoanthids, LPS's or SPS's when it comes to your lighting and you wont be able to put an Anemone in there because they will get to large for a 10 gallon. I feel you should get all your basic test kits, Ammonia, Trites, Trates and PH and with Corals you should also get Alk, Calcium and Mag and you will need a way to check your SG and I would suggest a refractometer. I would scratch the whisper filter and just go with a couple PH's, good flow with sand and LR will be your filter and then 10-20% WC every week and you should be fine

I can't afford it :P. It's going to take me weeks to get the money to get the fish. Right now I have the 20G whisper, 10g tank, heater, sand, test kit, and will be getting some live rock for very cheap. I'm pretty much set besides a different lamp and the powerhead.

Marine Needs a Lot more attention than freshwater and all the kits are more important for marine than freshwater and it can be an expensive hobby :)

U can easily get by with little kits for freshwater but marine oh no

No one said fish keeping in general is cheap :)

Yes I know, but I'm trying to make a small tank that's relatively inexpensive. I have a lot of the parts now.

My freshwater is all up and running in my 55G and well....what more to do? :D

Well Good Luck and it looks like u nearly there

Use caution when you use the ocean water from Petco. It can vary from box to box. Also use a hydrometer to check it. The salinity was reading 1028 and I was using it for WC and my salinity is at 1022. I had to add RO water to it to get it to where my tank is at.

I agree that the lighting may be an issue depending on what corals you get. You can easily get a upgrade kit from Dr's. Foster and Smith. We upgraded the light that came with our 7 gallon to a 32W CF. Look into mushrooms for a beginners. They seem really hardy and grow like crazy.

I also don't have a protein skimmer on my tank but I have one. One of these years I will hook it up. You can get a nano protein skimmer that are for tanks up to 30 gallon and is fairly cheap. I got it from Dr's Foster and Smith. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4392+14676&pcatid=14676

That's not a bad price! Will the saltwater be fine in a 20G Whisper for now?

Yea that should be okay for now unless you want to upgrade it. IMO I don't think that you can really over filter your tank. My son has a 10 gallon with two goldfish in it (long story) and I bought a starter kit and it came with a whisper 5-10 gallon filter and I pulled that off after about a month and put a Aqueon 30 on it. Next year when they get a 38 gallon tank I might use that one and another filter. Plus remember that if you have live rock and sand that also acts like a filter as well.

Did you see SantaMonica's thread on marine equipment section? (nitrate/phosphate remover) Ive been following the thread for a week, and just set up my turf mat 3 days ago, so I cant yet speak from experience, but its cheap to set up and cant hurt to try...
