I just brought 70lb+ of limestone, before I put it in my fish tank, I need to hear someone confirm that it is perfectly safe to put it in my tank, the rocks are pretty heavy and my tank is a standard 55 Gallon tank.

I also have eggcrate on the bottom and sand as substrate

are you concerned about weight?

70 pounds of limestone is probably about half a cubic foot, according to this site:

http://www.natural-stone.com/limestone.html

On the other hand, water weighs about 62 pounds per cubic foot. So a half cubic foot is about 31 pounds.

So it might seem like a lot, but the water it's displacing is also heavy. So think of it as adding 29 pounds to your tank while empty. Can it handle 29 pounds, if the weight is evenly distributed (as per the eggcrate, not to mention the sand)? Absolutely.

When the tank is full it'll be something like 550-600 pounds. This just isn't a problem. I didn't weigh all the rocks I have in my tank, but it's a decent amount!

Hi!
Don't worry, Kevin. My tank is also a 55gal (standard) and I added around 145 lbs of rocks into it. Just be sure to put the rocks directly over the eggcrate and then add the sand.

Uh oh, I already have the eggcrate and sand in..?

If the tank is still without fishes, I think it is easy to rearrange it; no?

man you will be fine just place the rock in very slowly dont let it drop from your hands and evenly distribute the rock thru-out the tank if you place it all in the middle you will create a pressure point in that location which could cause a crack or a crash, a little here and a little here is the theory, good luck and limestone is a good buffer for africans just make sure you dont have anything on it that will leach out in the tank..

yep, what i would do is one pile left side second pile right side and a pile in the middle if you have enough that is this will look nice and will distribute an equal amount of weight..

Is it ok to create 2 separate piles on each side?

Yes. Tank will look better IMHO, if one pile is bigger than the other one. It will look more natural, I think. Look my tank to have just an idea.
