Yes the width is the main concern. The volume of water is also an issue. Oscars are very high waste producers and release a large amount of hormones in to the water. A four foot tank with a 18in width is minimum requirements for a truely healthy Oscar.
Well, this oscar is located in northern IL, west Dundee. I'm trying to get the owner to advertise at various sites (monster fish rescue, oscar fish, here), but she doesn't think she can ship, but maybe can meet someone part-way.
With the way this oscar has been treated, I doubt it will grow too large for a 55. There is a chance for sure, but I bet a lot of damage is already done. I've cured HITH with nothing more than a lot of water changes and a varied diet.
I agree with Rallysman. My Oscar had a bad case of HITH. We upgraded from a 55gal to a 125 and really varied her diet. The HITH is gone. There are just some scars leftover.

I didn't have a clue when I got my two baby oscars...Now I see..and I'm worried...I just got a 75 gal tank..and come to find out...its not good enough....wish me luck. New to this hobbie..and just learning as much as I can. I would like to stay in touch and disprove all the horror stories of keeping two Oscars.
I believe that I can have some jack Dempseys' and some Convicts.
When I messed up and put too much salt in my tank and my red oscar (Creek) went blind for two days...my tiger oscar (Lilly) took care of him...she lead him to the food at the top of the tank...they took care of each other.
And when Creek got a good bit bigger than Lilly...he didin't bust her chops...he was cool to her..and taught her how to hunt the minnows..and they started to work together.
It upsets me when I hear people say that you can only have one oscar. Its not completely true....is it? or am I just too young in the hobbie to see the light?
