Hi everyone, I hope maybe I can get some advise and answers here. I have a 20 gal sw set up. I bought it from someone else who had it for 9 months. It has sand, 30 lbs of live rock, a few hermit crabs, snails, 3 crabs (1 green & 2 blue) a shrimp, a watchman goby, fire goby and a clown. I have had no problems with it as I transfered a lot of the water from their tank to min. I have decided that I want to have a larger sw tank and I have put in 30 lbs of live sand into my 40 gal tank (I think I will add another 10 lbs) and I have put in water and salt. I am in the process of setting it up and a friend gave me 10 lbs of live rock that has dried out. Can I use this as base rock for the 40 gal? Should I boil it as it smell pretty bad. ( I have it outside right now). Or should I go to my lfs and buy 10 lbs of texas holy rock for base? I want to have this as more of a reef tank and get corals etc in it. I have the lights, filters, heater, skimmer and powerheads for it I am just wanting to set it up correctly. I was really lucky with the 20 as it was all ready to go and my levels have been perfect. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks all.

Yeah , never put stinky live-rock in your tank. Definitely treat it 1st if you are going to re-use it as base-rock.

So you are already falling victim to the aquarium hobbyists' Needbiggertankitis disease ,huh? Soon you will be thinking the 40 gallon tank is too small also :grinyes:

I would just boil the dead rock, scrub it off, and use as base rock....no reason why not too...

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it as I am trying to set up my tank so that I will have no (major) problems later. :)
Oh I have the sickness really bad already. I started with 1 10 gal tank 3 years ago. I now have 22 set up and 6 waiting for room to set up. My largest tank is a 45 tall. I really want a couple of really big tanks (100 +gal) but no room. :(
