Can coconut shells leach tanin into the water?

can they make it yellow? i have some in my convict tank, it's either a piece of driftwood that was given to me (was in a tank before) or the coconut shells. the tank that had this piece of driftwood was kina yellow, but i thought it was the cheap incandescent lights, but the water is definitely more yellow, can tell when i drain in a white pail, and i never had yellow water before. i added the shells about the same time. can anyone rule out the coconut shells before i go lifting and moving things in my tank? ty

Coconut shells leach out tannins like most types of dark wood. You can soak them in boiling water for 15 minutes, dump the water and repeat. This way, you take out most of the tannins in the wood.

Yu can add activat4ed carbon to your filter to remove the tanins that are in your water. Just remember to keep it changed.

it's not going to hurt anything. unless you really really hate the way it makes the tank look, there's no need to mess with it.

yeah i can't stand it, but i think i'll just see how it looks after a clean. lot of algare i need to remove in there. ty both
