Plants Weaken and Die over time. Confused.

I've been lurking on these forums for awhile and learned alot! So thanks! I decided it was finally time to say hello.

I've always kept fish, but just recently ventured into the planted part realm. I am really enjoying it, but have a few nagging problems that just won't go away and I'm hoping someone may have some suggestions/advice.

First and foremost problem (picture below), many of the plants I get look absolutely great when I get them, but seem to just grow weak and die over time (there are a few exceptions). The tank is a 30 gallon bow-front with a black flourite substrate. I fertilize it with a few drops of FlorinMulti every day, and am also adding CO2 every couple days by the use Sera tabs. The tank has 48 watts of T5 lighting, one 10k and one 6,700k bulb. I understand that 2 watts per gallon or more is a generally accepted rule and I'm only sitting at about 1.7, but before I go out and buy a more expensive T5 setup I wanted to confirm my suspiscion that I may not have enough light.

You can see how the plant is semi-transparent as it weakens with dying baby leaves and tips of mature leaves.

The second problem I'm having is thread algae. Drives me crazy since it's shown up a month or so ago. I prefer not to add any new fish and am nervous about adding extra light to solve the above problem only to make the thread algae worse. The heavily planted tanks I've seen at the local high end fish stores have zero algae problems like this and my goal is to equal theirs in looks and health. Any ideas on how to reduce the hair algae? My hunch is that since the plants aren't growing well, and I'm fertilizing the tank daily that I have an excess of iron. My test continues to show 0ppm but I have a feeling it's wrong.

Ewwww, algae!

Thanks for your time.

I don't think your light is a problem at all. I have less light then you and all my plants do fine. Since you have flourite already.. I would dose flourish N, P, and K once a week and also dose regular flourish once a week. I would dose excel daily to try to get rid of the algae. Change 25 to 50% of the water about every 2 weeks to a month. Read this and it may help. http://www.barrreport.com/estimative-index/2817-non-co2-methods.html

Thanks very much for the advice and link. I already do a 15% water change weekly so I'm ok there I think, and I'll look into getting the other things you listed. Thanks again!

I wouldn't change the water but 1 or 2 times a month. Too much will actually cause algae because of the fluctuating co2 when your changing water. If you dose excel, then it would be ok to change the water about once a month or maybe twice. If you don't dose excel, then only change the water 2 or 3 times a year. With or without the excel, you should still dose N, P, and K, along with the regular flourish once a week.

Is it just me, or are there no pictures?

First and foremost, are you sure that all of your plants are truly aquatic? That's what I was going to look for in pics, but either pics aren't there or my computer isn't showing them.

The Sera Tabs aren't exactly the best co2 source....With your lighting, you don't really need co2, but Excel(as mentioned) will be a good carbon supplement and will help out with the algae.

Thread algae typically develops from too many nutrients, so I would keep up your regular water changes and make sure you aren't overfeeding. Have you checked your parameters? I'm curious about NH3, NO2, NO3, and GH/KH.

I would stay with the weekly water changes and up them to 25%. You should be able to manually remove some of the thread algae with a toothbrush .I agree the Excell could work for you. Those tabs could be doing more harm than good. You don't want the CO2 level to be always going up and down.
Some pics would be helpfull.

personally i'd up the water change to 50% weekly with that light no i dont think ya need co2
jm hart i think its you as i can see the pics fine

you got to be kiddin

only change water once or twice a year?? your gonna lose every thing in your tank .. water changes do nothing but good for your tank i change mine every week
