For those of you who have had both, which has more personality...the oscar or the Jack Dempsey?

And how does the red devil/midas cichlid compare?

Any others that have more personality...say the red terror?

Currently, I have a 11" oscar and a tank of small JDs, but I also got a small second oscar who I like, too. So the JDs may go unless someone thinks in the long run I would like the personality of the JD better than the new oscar.

Thanks for your help.

My oscar will take food from my hand let me stroke him and gets excited when i go to his tank, my JD's just sit there and won't pay me any attention.
IMO you won't find a cichlid with more personality than an oscar.

I think oscars are a little more personable. My new lil JD gets right in the mix though, however, he is still a little people shy. My Oscar will do all kinds of tricks, even between feedings. I dont have a lot of experience with red devils, but from what I've seen they seem to be a tad stand offish.
:evil_lol:If you need a new home for your JDs, I'd be happy to help out, lol.:lipssealedsmilie:

i have the same experience with my oscar vs my jack. the oscar loves the attention, and sometimes i think the jack is just waiting for me to go away ;)

I agree. Oscars have a lot of personality. I had a Jack Dempsey too. But I have hand fed mine O's, played a modified game of catch with a ping pong ball; and annoy the heck out of people I didn't want over. (This particular person in mind was quite loud, which my oscar didn't care for. Everytime she would come over, he would spit water at her. ) I did not have a lid on his tank btw.

Actually you will find a fish with more personality and that is the Parachromis Dovii. The greatest problem with this fish is regardless of sex, it is about the most aggressive Cichlid you will find. It will eat anything that is in it's territory making it a solitary fish in a very large tank. If you are lucky you will find a bonded pair.

My Oscars also take food from my hand and "wag" like a puppy when I walk into the room. They make a far more suitable centerpiece than the Dovii and are a great fish to have.

Thanks for the comments. The reason I ask is that I was told that JDs have as much or more personality than Oscars, but I am not finding that. Yes, the JD babies come for food, but there is something more in an oscar.

Last weekend, I picked up a white oscar, and I tell ya...he has more personality than any of those JDs! When I decided on JDs for the 75g, I did consider oscars, but I figured I had better get outside of my little box. Forget that...back in the box I go.

Even my wife has noticed my big oscar's personality. So, I think I am going to get a couple more baby oscars and see how it shakes out.

I will be getting rid of four JD babies for sure. I think I will keep one of them and put it with my big oscar. I know what will happen. The JD will turn out to be my favorite fish.

I am in Michigan, so if you want to drive and pick them up, they are yours. I am not paying shipping costs. Otherwise soon they go back to the LFS...who for some reason does not mind my indecision. :) Of course, we have a good arrangement. I buy fish and give them back for free. Can't beat that.
