i want an interesting project (a cheap one) that will make my tank nicer or make it better for the fish.

Hmm....you could make a canister filter!

Do some DIY CO2 for your plants:

Swap out your light fixtures to grow better plants...or add in a cool bulb like a blacklight (I did this project myself, its so simple and cheap!):

Some more:
-Build a sump
-Get some plastic craft mesh (its sooo cheap!) and make a moss wall, or a box to use as an emergency isolation trap, or emergency tank dividers
-Build a brine shrimp hatchery out of some bottles and an old air pump. Feed your fish live food!

this isn't exactly what most people think of for DIY but looking for driftwood or interesting rocks/decor is always good motivation to get out of the house. I have thought of many projects while out looking around.

Here in MA there are lots of opportunities to find interesting branches and wood as the ice storm last weekend was kind enough to break trees into manageable chunks. I'll have some nice cured driftwood by the time I'm ready for it.

For a bloke with 788 posts, I'd wager there aren't many DIYs you haven't tried... How about you give us a list of things you have done...? Might save whole raft of, "Why not try tying your plants to stones to hold them down?"...or "A piece of extra filter wool in your HOB outlet will slow the current" type replies...

maybe post a picture of the tank....

Make a periscope!
