I'm new to the snail world so when a lot of different scientific names are thrown out there, I have to question...

So far on AC I've seen the popular brigs/apple snails/mystery snails being referred to as Pomacea bridgesii, Pomacea diffusa, and Pomacea bridgesii diffusa (as a subspecies) however there really isn't any conclusive evidence to back any of that up...so my question is, which is it?

I use Pomacea Bridgesii. That is the term that the USDA currently uses, so I go with that.

Ken Hayes has replaced the name Pomacea bridgesii to Pomacea diffusa. As the old name has really stuck to some of us, it is still in use until now.lol

I use Pomacea bridgesii, whether it's right or wrong, it's used more often and makes things easier. I seem to do the same with a number of species really.

I've only heard Pomacea diffusa (as a species) a few times, most notably in papers regarding native snails. Until Lupin started pushing it recently, I haven't heard it in quite awhile.

Did some more research on this and Lupin is somewhat correct.

They did not replace the pomacea bridgesii species. Pomacea bridgesii had two subspecies.

They changed the sub species Pomacea bridgesii diffusa to its own species Pomacea diffusa

and

They changed the name of the subspecies Pomacea bridgesii bridgesii to its own species Pomacea bridgesii

Same here, I am sticking with bridgesii for now, lol

Well there is still the question of whether or not if the snails we keep are Pomacea diffusa, a bridgesii subspecies Pomacea bridgesii effusa, or even their own species. :duh:

Maybe they will be called Pomacae brigs one day to enforce the mispelling. ;)
