12 Volt Man's New Fishroom Thread

naw, its easy. same as fresh - only you have to watch salinity, and a protein skimmer helps to keep the wastes from accumulating - although I don't have one of those either LOL

my tank is a stripped down version of a normal marine tank.

notice: I have no live rock, no protein skimmer, no sand/crushed coral LOL

I have saltwater and thats it :)

but for my monos and a few crabs, thats all I need :)

okay, I don't want to burst your bubble, but this tank only works because of the type of fish that are in it.

ie hardy fish.

I probably could not put a clownfish, or a tang or most other saltwater species in this tank and have it do well at all.

reason is - the absence of live rock and no marine sand or aragonite (crushed coral) substrate.

many saltwater fish graze on algae on the live rock (eg. angels, tangs) and most are more sensitive so they will need a higher pH than what my tank has (the marine sand/crushed coral keeps the pH up higher).

the other reason is that many saltwater fish need much more structure to hide/get away from the aggression of other fish. eg. I had a school of green chromis in this tank that all killed one another excep the last one.

why? because I had no cover for them...

the absence of a skimmer means that I do have to change water every week. most reef tank owners never do this much because the skimmer takes wastes out of the tank BEFORE they break down into nitrates, hence, keeping the need for water changes to a minimum - which is good since salt is expensive.

I maintained reef tanks at the LFS where I used to work so I have a lot of experience with saltwater so I knew this would work.

but I would NOT recommend this type of a half assed setup for a first time saltwater owner..

this tank actually started off as a brackish setup (monos are brackish water fish that do better in full salt was they mature) with little salt..I raised the salinity up to 1.020 over time..then added the golden Jack and the hermit crabs..

if you are going to do a salt water setup, I would at least recommend going with the skimmer, live rock and proper substrate...

you will have much better success doing it right, not wrong like I did..

my tank only works because of the particular type of fish I have...

if you want to do a brackish setup with monos like I did and work it up to salt over time, that is not so bad.

but I wouldnt go with all the pretty saltwater fish that we are all used to seeing and try and put them into a tank with some salt and thats it.

do as I say, not as I do :)

the brand of salt I use is Instant Ocean.

hope this helps, even though it may not be what you wanted to hear...

I love the fish that are in it, I did not want all those fancy fish, I liked what you have in it now. Also I would get a skimmer for it. can one use the HOB with added skimmer?
jebo178.jpg

Suitable for Marine or Fresh Water tanks up to 30 gallons
Intergrated aquarium filter and protein skimmer in one
Hang on unit for easy installation and maintenance
Compact and space saving
Elegant design, practical performance.

I would do a thirty gallon with only 1 or 2 fish.

can one use the gravel like you do and add some live rock? I already have high PH in my water. I use HOB filters, I take it this is a no no with salt water?

you could use one of the combo skimmer/filters, but they don't work very well compared to an actual seperate skimmer.

I am filtering the tank with 2 aquaclear 110's. although soon it will be only one. I need to make recepticles available for the new 40 gallon tank :)

a 30 gallon is going to be too smal. you need at least a 65 but preferrably a 90. my fish are too crowded in my tank right now...I wish they had an extra foot of length to swim in..

groups of Monos work best - at least 4. and they need room to swim. they can get much bigger than I have them. the books say up to 10 inches, the biggest I have seen is about 7 inches or so...

drat. the 40 gallon project is probably going to be put on hold for a bit.

I was testing circuit breakers to find out which recepticals are on which cicuit etc. and my entire basement (hallway light, fishroom light, bathroom and all the aquarium recepticals are on one circuit).

I am fine with what I have now, but it would be pushing it to put another tank down there, esp. if I want decent lighting for it, which means wattage lol

with the two tanks now + basement lights, I am close to 1300w already. 685w alone are the from the 150. its the heaters that draw all the power, of course...

may have to see about getting an electrician to come by at some point in the future...
