Corydora question. Please help.

I have 25 julys and around 12 weitzmanis and they do not shoal together.
Certainly they dont attack each other (no way) but I got 2 groups moving separately in the same tank.
But in other tank I have punctatus and julys; and they are all mixed up.
It seems that it depends on origin area...

it doesn't matter what type of cory it is, does a dog care if another dog is black or white? the only time you might want to keep all the same coloring is if you plan on breeding them, other than that they will school together just fine

HUmmm...

Male Dog may jump above any female dog; no matter black or white; or boxer or pitbull... I doubt a weitzmani may jump above a july... they will only look for other weitzmani. So I think they know which is same species and which is not ...

I don't know, IME I really think they do care what species the other corys are. As I said, they will get along with any cories of other species fine, but I have kept 2 species in 1 tank a few different times, and always they stick with others of the same species. Every once in a while they will all be together, but 95% of the time they are separated by species. I don't know if it's color, pattern, size, a combination of all these, or if they just innately 'know' somehow, but my experience with their behavior is that they definitely show different behavior with others of the same species versus other species of cory.

Dogyluver, it is more like keeping foxes with wolves. They are not the same species even though they look much alike to us. There are some corydoras that are albino but came from aeneas and other albinos that came from paleatus but each distinct species is just that. The aeneas will breed and shoal with albino aeneas because color does not matter to them but species does. The fact that most, if not all, corydoras get along with others does not make them the same species but it makes it a lot easier to keep them together.

In case you wanted to know, you have a peppered cory and a schwartz's cory.

cories don't care if they have spots or not they are still cories and will school they only time it would matter is if you want to breed a specific cory. To bring out colors or patterns you want them to be the same.

I hope this isn't considered derail, I really think its relevant.....don't want to start a new thread that is so similar to this.

I want to get perhaps 20 cories for a 270g.If you were going to get this many would it then be okay to get different kinds?Maybe 5 each of 4 different kinds?

I was hoping it would be acceptable, and that my cories would be happy enough to want to hang out in Paris....lol

Get 10 of 2 different kinds, I personally think 20 of one kind would be better. I have 8 peppered corys in my 55G and they are always rooting around together. 4 small groups of 5 would be fine, but they would most likely stay in 4 small groups and not 1 large group.
