I read where there calcium fortified and I was wondering if throwing a small on in my tank once a week will be ok. I do 2 water changes each week so my water is perfect, and I do want my babies to have good shells. these are small blocks, nothing major really so if there calcium enriched ( I figured they are with the then being in block form) will they be ok? this is what I have

I don't know much about using these, but you can use cuttlebones (found in the bird section) or even Tums for some extra calcium. Or snail jello.

I have lots of these, I do not want ot make anything if I can use these. i would have to buy cuttle bone, and I would have to make jello LOL! but I had these for months in the package as I was going to use these once for a vacation. I have like 10 of them.
 
Vacation feeders are a great source of calcium, you just have to be careful as they can contain phosphorus (I believe) which can cause algae outbreaks. There are also wondershells, which are supposed to be good for snails.
 
I made plaster of Paris pucks out of the recipe by Rachel. They're wonderful. My snails actually love them to heaven. They're cheaper than the feeder blocks we buy and make great sources of calcium, increases pH and hardness levels and seems to clarify the water better. I noticed the difference they can make.
 
is it possible to use the plaster of paris pucks (that's a lotta P's) without the increase in pH? I'm already sitting pretty at a pH of 8.2

I don't think I've noticed my pH increasing any further than 8.0 in my snail tanks. They just stabilize the pH when they increase the hardness levels but you expect hardness levels to rise when you are dosing calcium. Plaster of Paris pucks save you the trouble of making snail jello and then calcium pills although I admit I still feed my snails Tums from time to time as they just love to bury their faces into the tablet and get their faces doused in white powder.:laugh:
