topping off water

Yes i have mine hooked to my faucet. Most ro/di filters i have seen come with an adapter to hook to a faucet. I purchased the one I have from airwaterice.com

Wecome, First I'd like to know what type of tank you are running?
FW or SW? Fish only, reef. What type of fish are you keeping and/or intend to keep?
How old is your tank? the list goes on.

I have a FOWLR that i've added a mushroom coral to recently. Its been in there for a few months and doing very well. All I use is tap water with API Dechorinator. I'd like to keep more mushroom coral and maybe some other, easier "softies". Reducing some of the red algae (although not a serious problem) would also be a bonus.

ro/di filter is good but if you just dont have the money then treating your tap water with a de-chlorinator is fine. i use prime because a lot of people recommend it. im fairly new though so dont take my advice over an experienced member.

a few questions i have been meaning to ask. can you overdose with prime to where it is harmful to fish? i do water changes with 5g buckets and i treat each bucket with 1ml of prime and let sit overnight before adding into to tank. i run a filter with carbon which i think helps rid of any chemicals left in the water.

The only trouble with topping off with tap is that the trace elements are unknown for the most part and frequently vary. RODI gives you a known starting point and removes one bit of doubt. Before I had an RO unit of my own, I used water from the grocery store machine. I'd do that before I opted for tap water. JMO though.

Prime states that it is safe up to 5x overdose. I've never tested that though. lol

i wouldnt worry about it. just use it until its finished then switch to prime. but if you can, get an ro/di filter.

i agree with hooked newbie. doing it the proper way gives you a little security knowing you did all you can for your fishy friends.

You're best bet, unless you're one of the very few that have acceptable tap water, is to purchase a RO/DI unit. There are numerous reputable vendors online, such as Air, Water and Ice, The Filter Guys, and SpectraPure.

I agree. The only acceptable water sources that I am aware of come from snow and ice melts and have TDS values of ~2-5 ppm. The bulk of that comes from dissolved calcium, carbonate, magnesium, sodium, etc. I have some very good tap water (~30-40 TDS), but I'd never use it for my reef aquarium.
