My 4 yr old was nearly given 2 goldfish, but on my advise this was changed to 2 ADF's (he loves frogs) as I don't have the space for a decent sized tank for the goldfish to grow into. He also wants a red betta (male).

They will live in a 10gal, but just wondering what (and how many) other little fish can go in there? He doesn't like snails either.
Haven't done a community tank in 15yrs - ask me anything about cichlids and I could answer that!

Has been a rather sneaky way of getting another tank, past the missus, into the collection though ;)

adf's will eat any small fish they can fit in their mouth and catch...a betta could become prey as they sleep pretty soundly not to mention with their beautiful finnage, they dont swim very fast....and if you get some faster fish, make sure the adf doesnt starve to death as they dont see very well and get their food from smell and what gets leftover from other fish...

Are galaxy rasboras being commercially bred yet? Morally I wouldn't buy them if the aren't; just covering my bases should he see them. Would they be safe from predation?

I seem to recall cherry barbs used to be in a similar situation, and look at them now.

Galaxy rasbora is now an outdated name. They're officially called celestial pearl danios and have already been bred in captivity several times due to their ease of reproduction compared to most species.

You're confusing the ADF with the ACF which does prey on anything that fit in their mouths.

I recently bred my CPD's, and they are very awesome fish! And perfect nano fish for your tank. But make sure you have a lot of plants because they are shy fish but well worth it if you can find them.

Could always get a shoal of a species that feeds top to midline and get a shoal of corydoras, I'm sure your 4 yr old will get a kick out of the cute corycats and their whiskers, and releasing air that looks like they are winking.

I'd have thought cory's would out compete the frogs for food, who are the main reason for the tank. A bit like catfish nibbling cichlid eggs (different analogy but you get the point).

He'll probably go for neons like many people (6 a good number?) but I do like the celestial pearl danio's - they even prefer mildly hard water for spawning (according to my research).

Have some spare flourite - are there any dwarf vallis type plants?

I have 2 ADF in my 15gal with my betta, neons, plecos, and shrimp. they don't bother anyone. in fact, they can be a bit of a pain b/c if other animals are stealing their food you're going to have to hand feed them (12" tweezers I've found useful)

as for the rest of the stocking...don't ask me lol. i'm overstocked myself :silly:

btw pugwash...i love the quote in your signature :)
