I am setting up a 29 gallon tank. I am trying to mix a couple different species in one tank, so I am looking for small fish from lake tankanika. I want one species that will live in shells, FOUND, I am using multies, I am also looking for a fish that likes to hide in rock caves and might be a cave spawner or mouth brooder. And the last species I am lookin for is one that likes to inhabit open waters. This species isn't neccessary though.

Here is my stocking as of know, but I dobut it will work
A pair of julies
A trio (to start) of multies
And 6 Cyprichromis Leptosoma

Would that work? IF not please suggest me a species that inhabits those specific regions, thanks.

The cyps will not work. There is some difference of opinion on gallons, but 4ft is considered the minimum for their activity level and 10-12 is a better number. Julies might work, i don't know. I only have experience with keeping singles and it did not bother my multies at all, but then again he had no mate. I have calvus with my multies. the calvus spawn and the mutlies do their thing, and no adults have been eaten. I have never seen a fry in the tank, but that's to be expected when the calvus is built for predation.

What is a calvus? Does it like rocks, open water or shells? And how many could I keep?

Altolamprologus Calvus is a laterally compressed cichlid from Tanganyika. They are a great example of specialization in African rift lake fish. They are built to be stealth hunters, sneaking into a cave or crevice and snatching fry. They have sharp scales, which they use as defense against gaurding parents by bending their bodies, exposing the sharp scales. There are several varieties available, including black strains, white strains, and gold strains. They are similar to A. Compressiceps.
They grow to 6" for males. They would be okay for the meantime, but I think a fully grown pair would need the entire 29. But a fully grown pair alone in the 29 would be suhhhhweeet.

I agree on the Cyps. I've been tempted to do them in my 55, but have put it off until I get the 75 set up.

J. Transcriptus would probably make a good tankmate. I can't think of any top water Tanganyikans that would fit the 29.

I agree that an adult pair would fill a 29, but I have had mine for several years now, and they are nowhere near filling a 29. I believe the male is around 3 inches and 3 years old. I don't know if growth rate is linear, but so far it has been, so you could plan on several years of the tank working before the calvus started really taking over.

Oh yeah, you could get away with several 1"ers in a tank this size for quite awhile. My males have grown about 1" per year, and my female about 1/2". They have a great disposition for a community tank, better than Julies in my opinion.

Man i agree with roger and afro a 29gal would be a pair of Julido Transcript's and small colony of Multi's or sub the Transcript's for Calvus.. cool info guys..

Yep no cyp's you would be wasting your money on a tank that size for them sorry my friend..

Cool, cool, are there any fish that would be ok with both of those? I feel that both the fish listed would be hiding alot of the time.
