this lil guy has the body shape and fin coloration of a johanni but it has vertical stripes not horizontal. Could it be some kind of cross-breed?

The first pic is a Blue Johanni, the second pic is an Electric Blue, similar to your pic..........:)

I disagree.. I think it looks way more similar to the first pic.. but then again its a bit blurry

As the poster noted, there are vertical stripes, it could be some kind of HB, A better pic may help.....

Hi!
We have to be careful when using common names. The first pic you posted, Weezer, is a Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos; known as Maingano, Blue Johanni or Electric Blue Johanni. The second pic is a Sciaenochromis fryeri; known as Haplochromis ahli, Haplochromis Electric Blue or Electric Blue Cichlid. As you can see, both are known with Electric Blue names and are very different species. About your fish, MattShark, the pic is blurry; but IMHO, it does not belong to any of these 2 species. Hey, welcome to AC.

Body shapes and fins are very johanni. A better pic would help but its no way a johanni with vertical stripes.

Its not an ahli/fryeri either.

A clear pic would maybe give you a better chance of an ID and it may in fact be a hybrid.

Not everyone is famililar with the sientific names of a particular species, The OP asked if the fish was a Blue Johanni, so i posted a pick of one to compare the OP's photo with, IMO it does look like an Sciaenochromis fryeri, although a better pick would help, but thanks for your input, others may find it useful.....:)

Its not an ehli/fryeri either.

I agree a johanni does not have vertical stripes, and i dont think it is from the pic........:)

Hey, no problem, Weezer!

It looks a bit like my pseudotropheus elongatus "Chewere," which has vertical stripes. Difficult to tell from such a blurry pic.
