Ahoy seafaring folk,
Just been to my local river and got me a couple more sticklebacks, but i was quite pleasantly suprised to find that i caught a couple of pleco like fish. I live in the SE England, they are about 1 inch long, and have largish spiney fins on there back. Just wondering if anyone could identify them?

also, how long can sticklebacks grow, because i have a couple that are getting about 3 inches long now...

thanks guys,

love yaz,

/James

I cant do pics at the moment, no camera lead to attach it to my comp. It might be a loach? As it doesnt such the floor like a pleco. Its mouth points forwards and doesnt such th ground or ide of the tank, just lays on its belly moving its mouth quickly. Can direct me to somewhere where it shows me fish native to UK rivers?\\

thanks 4 ur speedy reply btw :)

Just to add. I looked at bullheads, the fish i got look like very small versions of them, but with there head in a simular proportion to their body.... will work on pics.

Madtoms dont grow much, they stay real small. Used as bait for bigger cats. Usually caught by leaving a pop can on a string in water over night, since they hid in small holes. Spines tend to stay sharp and they tend to secrete a mild toxin, wont kill you, but will smart like hell.

If its a madtom in the UK its definitely non-native - you should also report it to your local environmental protection agency or equivalent. I don't know that they have been reported in the UK...and I'm fairly sure they are prohibited...

...are you sure of the ID ? Here is a vid of one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhJ_Gfn8nxU
