weird I heard something about tetra buying it and calling it "easy start? but its not refrigerated or nearly as convincing with the tetra label (sorry tetra lovers I own some of there stuff and like it but there food and chemicals have a long way to go)

It's called SafeStart now. Tetra did buy it and it is nearly the same thing as Bio-spira. It has been re-manufactured to be able to sit on shelves instead of staying stored in a refrigerated cooling system. I've been using it since the switch and it works just fine still.

what is biospira?

It's not marketed under that name anymore. To my understanding, Dr. Tim who was the scientist who came up with it left Marineland, and they had to change the name. They also changed it a bit.

They have a freshwater version marketed as Tetra SafeStart, which is also supposed to be shelf-stable so you don't have to refrigerate it though refrigeration is supposed to make it last longer.

Also, there is now a marine version called Instant Ocean BioSpira (or something similar). I haven't looked into it since I only have freshwater tanks and a brackish tank. I'm not looking to take on saltwater at this time.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I did use the Tetra SafeStart, and it worked just as well as the original BioSpira. Though, my lfs does keep it in the frige in back and you have to ask for it. They don't advertise that they have it. I think it was less than $15 dollars (I wanna say $13 something?) for the bottle that's for up to 75g tanks.

I did have an old filter from a smaller tank (upgraded to the larger tank and using the small as a hospital), so it did have seeded media. The media was on for a week and wasn't cutting the mustard. I don't know if it would have worked as well if I didn't already have that media available. It did correct the nitrite spike though.
