im not entirely sure but the best thing for africans as far as compatibility would probably just more Africans. make sure they have plenty of room to run around in as well as places to hide. i have some electrics in my 30 gal. a 30 gal is a reasonable aquarium for all africans.

I've got to respectfully disagree here. IMHO a tank less than 55 gallons is not sufficient for African cichlids other than Tanganyikan shelldwellers or possibly a dwarf Mbuna species tank (although this setup would be better suited to an aquarist that has experience keeping Africans). Many species of African cichlids grow too large, are too active, or are too aggressive (or any combination thereof) to be kept in tanks smaller than 55 gallons. For Mbuna, I'd recommend a 75 gallon when mixing species, as these fish should be kept in the correct M/F ratios to help control aggression.

To the OP: I assume you're talking about copadichromis borleyi... here's a link to a species profile about them.

These look like a good choice for someone wanting to try Africans. If the trio is 1M/2F then you should be fine to keep them by themselves in a 55 gallon. Due to their eventual adult size, however, I wouldn't suggest keeping them in anything smaller. Good luck! :)
