Want to buy a monster gaming computer!

I agree. Especially when you're talking about using the 'latest and greatest' new hardware. Staying about a year behind on the technology is where you notice the savings.

Every computer I've ever built has saved me money compared to buying one prebuilt... cause I wouldn't buy a crappy bottom of the line pre-built. If you are looking for gaming performance... its going to cost you. Especially these days when most companies are marketing certain pc at gamers they are charging you a premium. If you try and take the cheap route and buy a non-gamer-oriented prebuilt and just add a video card you are going to be very dissapointed in its performance because like I said earlier they don't use premium components, they use watered down cheaper versions to save money. Performance is always going to cost you, but if you are patient and can wait for sales and have the know-how to build your own it, in my experience will always save you money in the long run. Or you can just buy a prebuilt piece of garbage and spend double the money upgrading it when you realized the components they used were just that.... garbage.

EDIT: Oh, and for the guy who keeps throwing around his "20 yrs of experience"... I've got 14, and thats only cause i'm only 24 and I've been building computers since I was 10. Experience doesn't always equate to wisdom...

Didn't I say from the beginning, if you are talking about building a computer at the level of something like Alienware, yes you will save money. For the very reason you said, you're paying the premium for the name.

I said one time that I have 20+ years experience. I didn't keep throwing it around. It just keeps getting quoted by other people. If you want to make it personal, take it to PMs instead of on a public forum otherwise keep your personal digs to yourself.

Hey new here.
I disagree with some of you, you can build a great computer from zero up that would cost alot cheaper then buying a computer already build. Especially nowadays things are alot cheaper then when it use to be.
All you got to do is be patience and look for deals especially combo deals.

You are absolutely right, I reread the thread and you did only state it once, that was wrong of me to attack you and I apologize. :(

This was my point the whole time... the original poster said he was building a gaming grade machine... so if he was to buy a prebuilt gaming machine he is going to most likely be paying a premium of anywhere from $1500 to $3000, depending on where he's getting it from and what performance specs he's looking for. If you can pick out components and wait for sales and build the machine for half that why on earth wouldn't you want to? :woot:

indeed true.. and my point is merely that he wants the latest greatest, biggest baddest machine, but get a deal on it?

aint gonna happen, even with individual parts.

I always build my own.

I always buy somewhat low end but highly overclockable CPU. Then I buy a really good heat sink for the CPU then drive the clock up to a reasonable level. I never had reliability issues with any of my PCs in the past.

My current setup is Intel Q6600 quad core running at 3.2GHz (instead of stock 2.4GHz) and the temperature stays very low so I am pretty sure it will last a long time too. It was nice and cheap. :D

NOPE lol...even if you did buy it its only a week later do they release something better and then cut the price of what you just bought

It feels like it..i know a bit extreme comment...ok 2 weeks =p

It really doesn't take much to get the most out of games currently.

Just need the cpu and ram that wont bottleneck the Gcard you use.

But if you are building a rig so that next years latest and greatest game will play on it well...then yah there is more to it than that ...

its really hard to advise since im not sure exactly what your current and long term gaming plans are.

I built my rig to be able to support my games for a few years..and leave me room to replace components when the time calls for it...Like recently changing out my 8800 for that 260 gtx.

Though that 8800 still ran games well...it wont in a year...but hte 260 will.
