My pleco got his eye ripped out!

With my big male angels pulling the other guy's eye out is the first target of choice. Most times it never kills them.
But you need to move the pleco

Oh that's really sad news. I'm so sorry. I would guess it's the other fish too in that case, or him growing too large to fit where he's used to hiding, like you said. If this was caused by a disease or infection, you would probably would have seen some kind of irritation, fungus, or cloudiness to his eyes before it became that severe.

You do need to get him out of there now. One of the fish could have cause the first one and gone after him again. But now that he's injured and less able to evade them, the others would be prone to pick on him too. Fish are real good at that, even if they're not cichlids.

Came home today to a pleco with a missing eye! It's just a common black pleco. I've had it for almost 2 years with cichlids and he was with the same cichlids for years before that. He's about 8.5 inches long.
I'm not sure what happened but that sucks and I feel bad for the guy. I guess there's nothing I can do about it but just leave him alone. :mad2:

Cichlids? what kind of cichlids? Are they ready to mate and claim the entire tank to themselves?

I'd salt the tank a little more it will help with fungus and other stress problems.

I have African cichlids. Some Malawi and some Tangs. I have 3 species that breed and 2 species that are trying but haven't done anything yet.
And I actually get my water from a well. It tests completely perfect for cichlids. It's from my grandpas old house is why I need containers. I've used a store bought test kit and had it tested by a water service that tests for chemicals, iron etc. It's really good water. It's comes out of the ground at 50 degrees so I like to warm it up too.
And I think I found the cuplrits. I had 2 pictus cats in there. I've since been told they aren't the best with cichlids but they did do just fine. Pictus and plecos should be just fine together but after the pleco lost both eyes I saw the smallest pictus biting the pleco in the head! This catfish is like 3 inches long and the pleco is almost 9 inches. So both pictus have since been removed. My girlfriend took them back to the fish store, kinda of a bad deal that was my fault but those fish should have gotten along ok. The fish store even argued with my girlfiend that the pictus would not hurt a pleco but I saw that little guy biting the hell out of his head so they are dead wrong there. Since then the pleco is swimming all over and doing just fine. With the picus in there he was always under a rock that I never seen him under before. I feel really bad about this. The cichlids don't seem to mind him so I'm not sure if I should just leave him in there? I don't really have anything else to do with him.

OMG. I wish I had seen this thread before my cichlids got to my pleco a couple days ago. They got both eyes and his fins. He was in the tank for a year with them and is also a standard pleco... (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187574)

How is your poor guy doing now? Seems to have been a month or so, how is he healing up??? Hope he's pulling through!!! Evil cichlids!

Deja Vu.... I swear I just saw this same problem posted like 2 days ago... pleco got his eye eaten by a cichlid!

very strange... I keep plecos with my cichlids and always have with no problems

My fish were picking on the injured pleco- the smaller ones were using him like a snack bar. He didnt even care anymore- just sat there. Good idea to remove him. Hope you did and that he's doing better! :(
