Could everyone please share their experiences towards this particular species assuming they were correctly identified as Viviparus malleatus? I'd like to gather more information on these snails. There is very inadequate information about this species particularly consistency towards their dietary menu.

I'd like the following information.

Diet (What your trapdoor snails were able to eat)
Temperature they were kept in
Lifespan (how long they lasted and the assumed age prior to getting them)
Tank or pond setup (elaborate please by including substrate, decors, etc)
Tankmates (whether it is fish or inverts)

I've kept some trapdoors in the past, I'll have to believe they're the same species, given the ridiculous number of synonyms they have.

Diet (What your trapdoor snails were able to eat)
Mine ate algae, as well as spirulina pellets. I've heard they have the ability to filter-feed as well, though this isn't exactly something I can confirm.

Temperature they were kept in
72-75f for the most part. I should note though, mine were wild-collected from temperate areas - depending on the origin, other specimens may be more well-adapted to other temperature ranges.

Lifespan (how long they lasted and the assumed age prior to getting them)
*shrugs*. I had them for over a year, but they didn't survive through a very harsh summer, when the tanks started hitting the high 90's.

Tank or pond setup (elaborate please by including substrate, decors, etc)
Sand with a lot of rocks. Nothing fancy.

Tankmates (whether it is fish or inverts)
I certainly can't remember them all, but among them are mts, mystery snails, quilted melanias, rcs, bamboo shrimp, amano shrimp, vampire shrimp, nerites, bbgs, desert gobies, heterandria formosa, platies and guppies.

Ahh...Thanks for the info, Vampie!

I was hoping some people like 247Plants, msjinkzd, flaringshutter and a few more would pour in.:nilly:

I keep them at tank temp of about 70-72. They eat zucchini, crab cuisine, and algae. I have only had them a year with no losses (as adults). THey are in a heavily planted tank with flourite substrate. They are in with tiger shrimp and meteor minnows.

Thanks, Rach and vampie. I've decided to release my snails in one of my ponds. I just dreaded the thought I'd never see them much but on the other hand, they'll be happier with the cooler waters and abundance of algae. The pond is too crowded with Egeria densa already fluorishing from the drop of temperature due to rainy season. They flower during the summer. I won't be surprised if the vivs actually proliferate there.:)

P.S. I better print the Pila conica page and get on with the hunt for these elusive snails.
