I saw an ad on a website wanting to sell Marbled Crayfish (aka marmokrebs). They claim these crayfish were found in the 90's, procreate via parthogenesis (i.e. they clone themselves), procreate readily and eagerly, eat snails and plants and aren't all that picky about their water. In another words, they're close to a perfect food source for my Jack Dempsey and possibly even my convicts.

Supposedly it's not even known if they even exist in the wild or where they came from in the first place. Has anyone kept these before? What's a reasonable price to pay for some of these guys?

Well, that definitely helps me on pricing so I appreciate the info. Anyone tried keeping/breeding them?

Also http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186658 which has quite a bit of information. Not sure who is closer to you. But I would trust both sellers as I have purchased from smokin (not sure if he has any left) and know black_sun has like 11 species of crayfish and is VERY knowledgable, as you see she is really a crayfish wearing what we call a human suit! LOL

You don't breed them, they sort of just reproduce. They don't need a mate. I have read you can keep them together and they are fairly docile. They eat a mix of meat, vegies, and calcium is important in their diet.

Good luck on your quest. They are quite the cuties but at some point you could be overrun with crayfish if you don't have a plan on what to do with them. Some people use them as feeders.

And for continued updates on krebs, check out marbledcrayfish.org (not to be confused with marbledcrayfish.com, which has some good information but lots of incorrect information).

Shh! You'll give away my secret! And then someone's going to stick me in a tank... or a boiling pot! :eek3:

I think people will eat anything they get their hands on sometimes.
