Hello folks I am going to be receiving a UV sterilizer soon,

11 watt jebo UV sterilizer I purchased from a seller named rekles from PlantedTank. It was a great deal ($35 shipped) so I was like what the heck!

Just wanted to create a thread for help, to make sure I do things correctly and to avoid a possibility of a accident, I need some advice..

Okay question.., is it okay if the UV sterilizer be installed pass the Eheim 2217's 1/2" tubing shut off valves and under my Inline co2 glass diffuser? What about the intake tubing? (5/8" tubing size) Can I install the UV on my intake (5/8")if that's even possible and effective?

Also, I would like to ask if this UV will kill these types of algae in the water column that can potentially establish on my plants and tank walls?

Blue green algae
Black beard algae
Green spot algae
Brown dusty algae, Diatoms???

Just need some clarification. Knowing UV sterilizers remove Flourish Excel's chemical properties, could I double dose or even triple dose to make sure the plants still get Excel?

Thanks guys.

It will only kill free floating algae spores, you could install the UV on a secondary line from the filter so that it doesn't get the full flow (see what it's rated for).

You can install the sterilizer on either side of the filter, whatever is easiest for you.

UV won't really help with BBA, BGA, or GSA. I think I read once that Tom suggested GSA may have a free floating component, but I've never seen any documentation of this. If it does, it'll help.

If chunks of the above algae flow through the UV, it'll kill the chunks, but it won't remove them from your tank.

It will take care of GW, and bacteria blooms, and water borne parasites like ich.

Finally, do you have a link to any documentation about UV's altering excel? I've seen several people say this recently, but the only things I've seen are anecdotal at best. I checked the Seachem website and their forum over on APC, and haven't found anything to confirm or deny this.

Not that I have BGA, BBA, GSA, it's just for the health of my fish :) My tank is pretty much algae free except diatoms(excess silicates -_- gotta clean filter) The deal was $35 shipped so I couldnt pass down the offer.

Why the static broken bulb face jeff

Best fish health = good water quality

UV sterilizers will kill parasites in the free-floating stage but a stable tank shouldn't have illnesses anyways.

Yeah I suppose you are right, my tank is pretty much stable msot of the time anyways..but meh, you gotta admit, its fun taking things to next level;in other words getting more high techy. I heard UV is great for discus tanks
