We are going to pick up 29G in this weekend. we would like to set up small south American cichlids tank this time. (The only experience of S. American cichlids is angels and convicts.)

The following is what we are considering. Please, advice us if it is bad ideas or you have better suggestions.

one 1.5" Keyhole Cichlid (Cleithracara maronii)
one 1.5" German Blue Ram
one 1.5" German Gold Ram

Are you planning to have any other fish in there, like tetras or cories?

Honestly, I would get a pair of rams (you could probably do one gold and one blue-- I suggest a gold male and a blue female). Part of what is so fun about cichlids is the breeding behaviors.

Other than that, it looks fine :)

i'd get a pair of each ram, never had a keyhole so i cant say about them.. this is my 75 gallon south american tank

Thank you for all the advice!!!!

Sounds good to me If you can find a keyhole cichlid. I haven't seen any in my or anywhere around me.

LFS nearby hear has keyhole cichlids and they look beautiful.

No, samll fishes or corys in this tank.
I worry about aggression during breeding. We have been seen enough aggression during convict breeding.

I don't know how bad it is going to be during ram's breeding, though.

Then, we are going to have a pair of gold ram & a pair of blue ram & keyhole. Isn't it overstock for 29G & how about aggression during two couple's breeding?

FYI, we are going to do 50% weekly PWC for this tank too.

I would stick with one pair of rams and the keyhole. Each ram needs about 12 square inches of floor space to call their own. Some a little more, some less. As far as aggression goes, they aren't equipped to do to much damage, more of a chase them away thing than hurt anyone. I think a small school of tetra like glolite would be fine. I don't think cories as the bottom part of the tank is pretty much stocked.

in a 29 gallon 2 pair of rams will be fine your gonna see some territorial issues but it will be just sparring no damage.. lots of wood and plants to break up line of sight and let every one pick their own territory... find some smooth flat rocks for them to breed on and yur in business....good luck with the new tank
