We are going to be setting up a 30 gal reef tank and there are a few things we need to get, protein skimmer and I think lights (will have to ask my boyfriend on that). Here's a few skimmers I found on Drs Foster and Smith. Tell me what you think of them. We are trying to keep costs down as much as possible.

With the above one would we need to get anything else, a pump or anything?

I'm afraid that's a big "no" on all of those. I have directly or indirectly used all of those, and I can safely say that the money is much better spent on something else. I wouldn't count on a good hang on skimmer being any less than about $150, unless it is used. Even then, you don't always get what you pay for. Take a look at the Reef Octopus hang on skimmers, as well as Aqua C remora skimmers. They are significantly more expensive, but Deltec MCE series skimmers are very good. I also consider Tunze skimmers to be quite good, though some seem to have issues getting things dialed in on these skimmers.

I going to have to agree. There are some inherent design flaws with all three choices, I could go into detail, but just save yourself the headache and get a good one from the get go. Check the used equipment section, there are usually a few in there that people have upgraded from and no longer need.

Go with a good one like the AquaC Remora Pro and know you've got a good skimmer. Easy to set up and easy to clean.

I agree with all the above. The skilter I use for water movement and to house macro algea, but it is not a skimmer!

I love my Remora C pro.

We talked last night and have decided that we won't get any of the above. One of his friends has a skimmer and no set up, so we're probably going to be using that one. Joe can't remember the brand but says he remembers it was a good one that his friend used on a larger tank than we have. So now we just need the bulbs, already got the light fixture. Then we can start setting it up to cylce.

There you go, just clean it good before using it. Light bulbs are costly but get good ones.

Yes they are, everything to do with a reef tank is costly, lol.
