I have a standard 20" all glass aquarium fluorescent light. I pull it out of the storage last night and find that it doesnt' work.. properly.

Here is the deal i put the bulb in and hit the on.off button nothing happens, so i fiddle with it by unscrewing and screwing the bulb back on. Here's the funny part ... it would light up at times. At first it just a flicker but after a few times it would stay on. I thought it's fine then, however when i hit the on/off button it would turn off but wont' turn back on when i hit it again until i twiddle with the bulb again.

I don't see any corrosion on any line, i did take out the outer casing but there is a little box in there that i dare not open out of fear of breaking it.

Anyone have any idea on how to fix it? it works just there is a kink keeping it from working properly, so i dont' want to just go out and buy another one especially with the lean time.

i can't seem to find the ballast on the thing... that is one of my guess tho

Ballasts are extremely difficult to replace and are expensive too. If that is the problem it's much more convenient to just replace the entire light. Have you replaced the starter? That would be my first step if it's an old fixture.

20" all-glass lights are literally like $25 at petsmart at the most...

so if it is the ballast.. I certainly wouldnt bother replacing it

check the fixture to see if it uses a starter. some do not.

K i made a mistake it's starter that i don't see :P

starter is the little cylindrical thingy right?

Well i just dug up my old herp. lamp and attached the plant gro bulb in it and us it as aquarium lighting... it's working well ..... still i don't like to throw my "broken" light away when there is a chance to fix it
