NEED HELP

Your cycle seems to be moving along, today you have less ammonia, more nitrite and more nitrate. So.....the ammonia produced is being converted better, but it's not done yet. As long as you have any ammonia or nitrite readings you need to be cutting them down with water changes. With a daily 50% water change you will cut those values in half which is what you need to do for the fish.

And yes, if you have media from an established tank to throw in a filter, by all means do it. It will definitely help put a quick end to your mini-cycle.

If you clean all your filters on any tank all at the same time, it's pretty certain you'll encounter a mini-cycle from disturbing/destroying too much of the good bacteria (the bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrite then to the less toxic nitrates) at once. Always alternate weeks on cleaning filters on a tank.

The filter media would be from a bio wheel, could I just float it in the tank or would it not do any good.

Do you mean a sponge or cartridge from the biowheel?

The sponges. Don't use the wheel. This is perfect and a great example of why it's a good idea to keep extra sponges in the filters.

Do I just float the sponges in the tank? or do i squeeze the filters into the tanks.

Put it in one of the canister filters where your other filter media is.

What you are doing by putting an established sponge in there is adding nitrifying bacteria to the filter which is what got killed off somewhat by being cleaned before you went away. That nitrifying bacteria will go to work converting the ammonia and nitrite much faster than waiting for it to fully reestablish itself. Still monitor your water parameters and do any water changing that's necessary based on your test results. I think you'll see a big improvement in water parameters within 24 hours of adding that established sponge to your filter. Keep us posted!

Ok, my wife just called me on her way to work and said everyone in the tank in breathing hard. She didnt have time to test the tank, today would be water change night. But I have not done anything else to the tank in almost a week. Last week I did a trim and a water change, i did find one dead otto. But I saw no other dead fish what could this be. Also all of the planted tank gurus, how do I rearrange the tank so I can make sure I have no other dead fish and to make sure I dont kill all of my plants?
