I have a 29 gallon tank with a topfin 60 HOB filter running at almost full speed. I have a fancy comet, a common goldfish (I think), and 3 cory catfish in the tank. I have a 23" bubble wand along the back of the tank. Do I need to run the air pump all the time? The fish do not seem to mind if I turn it off. The noise from the pump and the bubbles keeps me awake at night but if it needs to be on, I will deal with it. Any advice?

i was wondering this when i got my 29 a while ago....you dont need it on, its mostly for looks, unless the top of your water doesn't get agitated enough to get air in it then its needed but with ur filter it should be fine for over night, just put it on a timer with the lights..

timer with the lights should be fine for it.

I would get a power strip and a timer that way you can run the lights and the bubble wand during the day and have it turn it on at the same time.

Assuming you have an adequate filter, I'd see if I could get a buck or two for the pump and wand in a yard sale. But that is just a personal preference. I find them annoying.

Goldfish are large oxygen consumers. I would rather keep it on all the time unless your filter produces turbulent movements in which case you don't need the airpump.

I turned the air pump off last night before going to bed and I think that was worse than leaving it on. I was so worried about my fish that I could not stand to sleep. They love to play in the bubbles during the day so I am definitely keeping the air pump. I am not sure if the water is turbulent enough so I am going to leave it on.

put the don ho song tiny bubbles on and fall asleep :)
