How difficult would it be to build my own stand? i am in the process of buying a new tank this year (in the next few months) looking at glass cages for the purchace. narrowed it down to 120gallon 48X24X25,135 gallon 72X18X25 or 150 gallon long 60X24X25.looking at there stands they are made out of oak,the build looks simple,my only concern as i have never built a tank stand would be the weight of the tank. and yes it will be a reef tank. i dont mind flipping the cash for there stand, but i know a sheet of oak plywood only cost $50 dollars. i have a 75gallon right now but am forced to buy a bigger tank as the wife bought 2 fish for my tank (a suprise) and i need more room now.is a yellow tang and a foxface lo. oh and for my stock i am thinking bigger is better so i will probley go with the 150 gallon long.i will have a total of 8fish in the new tank.

If you figure this one out, let me know!!! I am planning to expand my collection by purchasing a few sets of breeding trios and can't even imagine how much money I could end up spending on a stand for each tank. Not looking to do anything fancy ... just functional. Won't be displaying anything.

yea my tanks i bought before from lfs the stands are made from pine(petco) and put together with a nail gun.the weight of my 75gallon right now it suprise's me the stand can support it.but i could see oak supporting the weight,im just thinking the build.

The stand designs are pretty basic. The difficulty is being able to properly cut and fit the pieces together so the stand is all square, level, and there's no gaps in the joints. Having the proper tools is a big help. There's a handful of sites online with plans for building stands for many of the more commonly manufactured tank sizes.

In my attempt to build a canopy for our 90g, I quickly realized that while I had the desire to do it, I lacked the proper tools and/or skill to properly construct even a canopy I was happy with. I've since put away any thoughts about building a stand for any tank.

garf.com has a good link to plans I used them to build on e for my 100 gallon.....It's very sturdy and holds the weight great...

About $40 worth of wood:)

yea i know what you mean,i have the tools and do projects around the house, but i don't want to risk it with a 150gallon tank, ill just buy the one from glass cages, off topic talking about the canopy. The tank im looking at measures 60X24X25 i want to buy a canopy with it,but thinking about my lights, the ones i have are from drs foster smith, and there only 48",and bulky.i do not think they would fit inside a canopy and i think they would get too hot.http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3733+14704&pcatid=14704 should i buy a retro fit kit to put in the canopy?and just get rid of what i have now?
