I have been buying from my LFS every so often & have had very very good luck (PetSmart & PetStop in Newburgh, NY). but just in case I get a carrier want to be preventative.

I have bought albino corys from Redkahuna & they were perfectly fine w/o QT. Also, I am planning on buying from a very reputable & trusted discus seller to be placed in a newly cycled tank. I should be ok not to use any meds or QT, right? Just acclimate their water to tank water, right? thx all

There is no point to use any meds for an illness that does not exist. Fish cannot be inoculated as humans are. The whole point of QT is a safe observation to prevent the possible spread of an illness.

In spite of QT, it is always possible to not detect an illness and still pass it on to the display tank. It does however reduce the likelihood of spreading beyond the QT tank.

i agree with Niko, especially if the fish is being shipped to you. shipping causes elevated stress levels and some fish diseases and conditions (such as ich) present themselves more often when fish are stressed.

i used to buy my fish only from one lfs and had the opportunity to monitor each fish i purchased for at least 3 weeks to a month before i took it home. no new fish were added to my fish's tank at the store and each tank was individually filtered. this is the only instance where i would've not worried about quarantining. But..... since the manager of that store has moved on to bigger and better things, any fish i buy from there from now on will definitely be qt-ed (translation: i trusted her fishkeeping practices and the way she ran the store, but now that she is not there, i will definitely qt fish i buy from there from now on).

If you want to use meds in QT, I recommend some broad spectrum meds like Aquarisol or Seachem's Paraguard. Neither of them are too strong and will probably work well.

thx. i guess now, only if I have to if I see any signs of distress.

There is no point using the meds regardless. Just give them a close observation for at least four weeks. If possible, have a few medicines such as PraziPro, table salt, Melafix and a few antibiotics such as Maracyn and Maracyn 2 in store. Do not panic when you observe unusual symptoms. Analyze first what exactly went wrong and what is exactly the problem. If unsure of what to do, post in this forum for further inquiries.

Meds are there "IF" you knnow something is wrong..DO NOT treat a fish just for the sake of it. At "least" 2 - 3 weeks in quarantine and close observation will show any issues with the fish. Then treat if required.

Its like a human taking cough medicine all through the year, whether you have a cold or not, just in case you catch a cold....pointless....

thx - will keep in touch.
