Petco Finally Liberates Betta from Cups

It's great news as long as they don't put them in tanks with fish that are fin nippers. I have three bettas that are all in tanks by themselves they are doing great I try to go up to their tanks often so they don't feel so lonely and they swim up to great me. They are so cute just love em!

Inside info: Petco is renovating most fish sections... they're categorizing the stores depending on their performance (I believe, A, B, C, D, ect) and the best stores are going to get lots of improvements and the worst ones are getting their stock minimized or removed all together. I mean, the bettas in community tanks is one of the examples of improvement (they're doing it at my local store too, whee!) but if it's a really terrible store like the ones you guys are mentioning then yeah...

I wrote PETCO a letter, thanking them for what they're doing with the bettas. If anyone's curious, here's the response I got:

"Thank you for contacting PETCO and sharing your positive comments regarding the change in habitats for the bettas in our care. The new signage and the placement of the male betta fish in community tanks in the store helps to reflect our Animal’s Come First initiatives. While some of the bettas will continue to be housed in the standard cup containers, our store associates are committed to ensuring their health and well-being. We will also continue to educate our customers on appropriate care to ensure their betta’s thrive in their habitats.
Thank you for your continued patronage. We greatly appreciate your kind comments and we will continue to serve you as best we can."

Wow.. I would expect a form letter. The 'Animal's come first initiatives' is funny, though... the animals have initiatives.

I think the Betta Workers Union were ready to stage a sit-out and all become a dull-grey colour until they were liberated from their cups... Petco had no choice but to capitulate.

Wow I think its great that they would finally give these bettas some room to move around.

I wish my local petco or petsmart would do stuff like that. I always see dead bettas when I go in there. Just recently I saw a bunch of bettas that had died because their cups were completely filled to the top with water!!! I found the manager and showed her and she said "oh yeah, well sometimes we don't have time to change all their water so we have volunteers from the high school come in and help change the betta's water and then the kids get school credit, so they must have done this"

I mean , if petco doesn't have enough employees to make sure all the animals at the store are cared for then they should freakin' hire some more, not be all cheap and find volunteers to care for them. or at the very least if they are going to have volunteers then at least train them!!!

For heaven's sake, they basically drowned a fish!!!

Fish can't drown, they breathe underwater /sarcasm

Back to the topic, I'm glad that Petco is giving the Bettas more space. All my lfs have them in cups. Even the two family owned ones that I like. =/

At least they don't have those 2 gallon goldfish bowl setups with a giant picture of smiling goldfish and a sticker that says "Bettas love it too" :headshake2: like the 2 chain store ones in my area.

I was in a Petco yesterday and noticed they have a bunch of betta's now in the tanks and not in the cups. The one I was in looked like they were keeping the betta in tanks with either shrimp or corys.

They looked so much healthier, the ones at this particular store were very active and brightly colored. A huge change to the ones that literally sit in the bottom of a cup, hopefully the change will also help change the mentality that a betta can live inside those ridiculous small tanks.

Yes, I think there needs to be a major campaign to change the conditions bettas are forced to live in, from the betta cups in stores, to those awful little betta houses, to the books on betta care, betta vases, betta Ipods, you name it, it's horrible if it has anything to do with marketing and bettas.

Well that is good that they are changing their ways, however I have not found a reason to go to either of them for over a year. In other words they still fail.
